Experienced Greenhouse Manager - An exciting job opportunity, based at the USDA-ARS Subtropical Horticulture Research Station in Miami, FL, to work as a contractor with the Mars Wrigley Genetics and Breeding program on cacao, a unique and understudied tropical crop.

Function of Job:

The Greenhouse Manager will be responsible for the ongoing care and maintenance of a germplasm collection currently consisting of 500+ mature cacao accessions and a seedling nursery and assisting with new introductions via the Miami Quarantine based at the USDA, transplanting and ongoing maintenance to continue building the collection in coming years. Position will support the Mars Wrigley Genetics and Breeding program through plant propagation, irrigation, ongoing care and maintenance, inventory management and setup of infrastructure (benches, irrigation, sensors) to support research.

Candidate should have background in horticulture and strong experience with growing container plants- (experience with woody perennials and tropical plants a plus). Strong background or experience in plant nutrition, pest and disease management, and woody plant propagation sought.

Under general supervision of designated supervisor, maintain greenhouses and field plant materials, including watering, feeding, pruning, weeding, propagation, testing, and pest management; operate environmental control equipment, maintain greenhouse facility, including installation, maintenance, and repair of special equipment; and assist in research projects. 

Contractor will be responsible for maintaining and growing a germplasm collection for breeding, research and evaluation, and maintaining healthy plants under a range of conditions in the greenhouses. Responsibility for providing clean and sufficient material for propagation and research by making crosses, learning and applying general propagation techniques for the duplication of needed materials, and maintaining an up-to-date and organized inventory of materials and locations

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain plant material for research, including watering, fertilizing, pruning, and propagation.
  • Apply the principles of Integrated Pest Management in scouting for insect, disease and weed infestations, identification of insect pest species, and monitoring of pest populations.
  • Apply or release chemical and biological materials to manage insect, disease, and weed pests.
  • Assist in research projects, including constructing, installing, maintaining, and repairing mechanical devices and/or equipment, and the application of chemicals or biological materials.
  • Maintain greenhouse facility, including installation, maintenance, and repair of specialized heating, ventilation, irrigation and/or other equipment.
  • Determine settings and ranges for environmental control equipment and operate such equipment, including computerized programs.
  • Maintain records and reports as required.
  • Test growing media to evaluate pH and soluble salts, including collecting, preparing, and processing of growing media and plant tissue samples.
  • Prepare fertilizer stock solutions; operate and calibrate fertilizer injection equipment.
  • Calibrate and maintain test instruments and spraying equipment.
  • Use and maintain personal protective equipment.
  • Assist in planning and production of plant stock as required for grafting, clonal evaluation, etc.
  • Maintain special plant collections as required, including vegetative and seed propagation, grafting, pruning and renovation of specimen plants.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • US Citizen per the requirement of being based at a US federal facility
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent industry experience (3+ years) in horticulture, plant sciences, agronomy or related field
  • Experience with greenhouse operation, management and experimental work.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and perform basic repairs to greenhouse machinery and equipment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and an ability to supervise, train and manage technicians
  • Strong intrapersonal communication skills in interfacing with researchers, visitors, students and team members
  • Effective time management and strong organizational skills, ability to oversee multiple research projects with overlapping timelines
  • Proactive self-starter with attention to detail and willingness to learn
  • Ability to lift 40+ pounds, and operate under hot greenhouse conditions over 90F
  • Current Driver’s License
  • Data entry and analysis in excel, familiarity in using and maintaining databases, inventories and reports (Microsoft Office, Windows)
  • Ability to wear a respirator when necessary while working in the greenhouses
  • Ability to work weekend/holiday rotational hours
  • Willingness to travel within the US and internationally for occasional trainings, meetings, or conferences

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  • NH Private Pesticide Applicator Permit.
